You can size a phase converter by amps once you turn the amps into motor horsepower. See each maker's answer for a 100 A motor, how many amps a converter pulls from your panel, and what a 100 A panel can run.
Rewiring a 3 phase motor won't get it to start on single phase power. See when swapping in a single phase motor makes sense, the utility check to make first, and when to keep the motor and add a VFD or rotary phase converter.
A machine with its own VFD, such as a CNC mill or lathe, can often run on a rotary phase converter if the machine's maker allows it. See what to check first: voltage balance, converter size, the manufactured leg and regen braking.
Can a VFD run your 3 phase air compressor on single phase power? How big a motor single phase drives run, why compressors start hard, and when a converter fits.
